Description:
Unmistakable wader with long, decurved brown to crimson bill and contrasting plumage. Adult has black face, and black and white breast-bands. In flight, shows white patch at base of inner primaries and blackish tail-band. Juvenile has brownish upperparts with buff fringes, faint breast-band, and dull legs and bill.
Distribution:
Rare resident in specific location in eastern districts of Shigar, Skardu and Kharmang. Found in fast-flowing mountain valley streams and rivers with shingle beds, usually devoid of any vegetation, at 500-4400m, descending lower in winters.
Behavior:
Forages by pecking, probing and raking, usually while wading in water roughly reaching up to belly; forages singly, rarely in pairs, but loose flocks. Mainly aquatic river invertebrates and fish; common invertebrate prey include stoneflies, larvae of mayflies, caddisflies, beetles and crustaceans.
